My Three Words for 2017

It's just about New Year's Eve. The WhatsApp NYE channel is abuzz with last-minute party preparations, and The Daughter is wrapped up on the couch watching the French version of The Returned. At least she's watching something in a foreign language. The past year has not been for the faint-hearted. We have lost people who have inspired generations, we have witnessed political change that will shape decades to come and fiendish terrorism in the name of religion. In fact, 2016 has been so savage, they have made 2016: The Movie.

Personally, it has been a rather good year for me. The highlight of which has been gaining the companionship of my daughter. Thinking back to My Three Words for 2016, I'm not sure she was the kind of companion I had in mind, but she certainly has all the best characteristics of a Doctor Who companion; confident, witty and Absolutely FA.

So, what words do I choose to guide me in 2017?

Mammoth. I read this article today which describes a collective insanity that pervades human cultures: An irrational and unproductive obsession with what other people think of us. The mammoth's fear of disapproval is a huge factor in most people's lives; we long to belong to a tribe and dread the idea of not being accepted. This year I intend to spend more time listening to my Authentic Voice and teaching my daughter to do the same. In the long run, genuine happiness comes from your Authentic Voice.

Think people are obsessed with you? Think again...

Gonzo. It was probably Hunter S. Thompson who ignited the desire to be a writer in me. His style of Gonzo journalism; articles without claims of objectivity and often including the reporter as part of the story inspired me to write my stories of my adventures. This year, the word Gonzo will help me pull those scribbles into a book: No Panic in Italy.

Lip. If this year taught me nothing else, it's to remain a Location Independent Professional - LIP - Lip. With all the change and uncertainty in the world having the ability to work in any place I desire – provided there is an internet connection – is a wonderful thing. I intend to cultivate my Lip status and continue to build revenue sources to support this lifestyle.

And, now that I have my 3-words for 2017, it is time to join the party and bid farewell to a savage 2016.

Happy New Year all!
